Water is very important in humanity to survive and exist. Without it, it is impossible for every living thing on earth to be alive. But water can also be a great threat to humankind and even to our property. In every state, there are different weather conditions, and one of it is the rainy days. During this season, people experience heavy rains and destructive floods. This can put a considerable pressure on the building covering of the house. Water destruction can have a devastating effect to your house and may lead to structural damage, mildew, mold and unhealthy conditions that may allow insects and other pests to breed. A thorough assessment of your homes should be prepared to see if there are signs of water damages for you to take precautions in stopping the problem. - Rooftop – this is the main structure that prevents the water from entering the house. Inspect the area comprehensively to ensure that all materials are well intact or not damaged. Your roof may be made of metal, shingle, clay or cement tiles, a thorough check is the best way to ensure safety. Check the screws on your metal roof if all are in place; and if your shingle roof is broken, cracked or missing, it should be taken cared of right away. Most leaks occur through the roof such as plumbing vent or skylight.
- Doors and windows – check for leaks all over your doors and windows particularly near the corner. Exterior doors should be protected from the sun and rain. Overhang will shield the windows and divert the rainwater away from the openings.
- Gutters – roof gutter is meant to channel away water into the drainage system. Many people do not understand the importance of having a roof gutter because for them it’s just a waste of money, hard to maintain and costly to repair. Gutters can avoid rainwater from leaking into the side of the house and damaging the foundation. The best way to maintain it is to put a metal screen to avoid dead leaves, branches and others rubbles that may block the drainage holes.
- Exterior walls – it should be well-painted and sealed. Landscaping and shrubs should not be placed along the walls because it can create cracks, which may allow insects and moisture to enter the house.
- Inside the house – check the faucet, showers and tubs for leaks, and if you found some outflows, replace it right away.
- Maintenance – water seepage and leaks may be prevented by regular inspection of the house.
